Tips and Tricks for Planning Holiday Mini Session Outfits
The most common question I receive during Holiday Mini Session time is “what should I wear?” Here are some fail-proof guidelines to have you looking and feeling great for your session!
– Plan outfits in advance and try them on. You want to avoid being stressed on the day of photos and make sure everything fits. Place everything in a spot so it stays clean and you can locate it easily before you get in front of the camera.
– Where to shop for kids: some of my own personal favourite brands for kids clothing are Joe Fresh, Zara, Children’s Place, Gap, J Crew & Old Navy. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on new outfits though, browse thru closets and pull some looks together before going shopping.
– Mom or women picks her outfit first, wear fun and practical clothing you feel good in and you will shine in your portraits. The more simple the outfit, the more classic and timeless the photos will be.
– Choose a colour pallet: select 1-3 main colours and add in neutrals. Not sure what colours to start with? Think about your home decor while choosing colours/outfits for your session, you’ll be hanging these images on your walls, so why not compliment the home decor!
– Coordinate instead of too matchy-matchy: the days of matching white shirts and jeans are gone. Try laying clothing out to see how it looks together. This will give you a sense of what is working and what’s not, and if you need some feedback, feel free to send me a message or text, I love being involved with details like that.
– Consider the weather when choosing outfits. Dressing for the weather is very important especially during cold weather sessions like these ones. Try to dress for the weather as best you can, freezing kids usually don’t hide it well. And accessories with cute mitts or a scarf to keep warm in the photos.
– Avoid logos and text on clothing, any recognizable branding or logos on clothing is very distracting and can ‘date’ the pictures.
– Solid colours photograph better than small prints. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good print, but you want to make sure it’s not too over powering or clashy with others outfits in the pictures. You will pop when wearing solids and that keeps the eye on you, the subject in the photos.
– Add textures, accessorize and layer, this is a great way for each subject to show their own style and individuality by adding in scarves, shawls, hats, jewellery, belts, vests, accessories.
– Don’t forget the shoes, this one always happens when we are getting ready for family photos. It never fails, one of us is missing a decent pair of dress shoes or shoes to suit the outfit selections. Shoes are a way to show your fun personality, so taking the time to coordinate this is always a plus.
